Sauber has revealed their hand early and has announced that Mexican driver Sergio Perez will partner Kamui Kobayashi for the 2011 Formula One campaign.

Perez, who is only 20, finished second in this years GP2 series and won four races, including the Monaca race.

Sauber are also entering into a partnership with the Mexican company Telmex, and Perez has been a member of Escuderia Telmex, who back various drivers, for many years.

“Formula 1 is the dream of every young racing driver,” said Perez. “And now this dream is about to come true for me.

“Although I’m very much aware that this is also a big challenge and responsibility, I’m happy to accept that and am proud to be representing my country in the highest category of motor racing.

“I would like to thank Peter Sauber for the faith he’s shown in me and I’ll do everything I can to make the most of this wonderful opportunity.”

Peter Sauber added: “Sergio has been on a continuous upward curve over the past few years. He demonstrated his fighting spirit in races over the course of last season and proved that he’s ready to take the step up into Formula 1.

“I look forward to working with him and am in no doubt that, in Sergio Perez and Kamui Kobayashi, we will have a strong driver pairing.”

Ross Brawn has insisted that Mercedes GP are not really interested in fighting for fourth place in the 2010 season, they are now focusing solely on next years championship.

“We are all very competitive, we want to stay ahead of Renault,” explained Brawn.

“There is no doubt that we would all be very disappointed if we fall behind Renault but we have an agenda which is to be much stronger next year – and if you said to me do you want to be much stronger next year and forget about Renault this year then I would say yes.

“Whether we are fourth or fifth quite frankly isn’t where we want to be, I don’t want to be fifth, don’t get me wrong but we will do everything we can, but that is everything we can that doesn’t affect the efforts going into next year’s car.”

Rosberg has consistently finished ahead of the seven-time World Champion, and the Briton insists that Rosberg also receives the same treatment as Schumacher.

“I wasn’t sure where Nico would be, and I delighted with the performance that Nico is producing within the team and really it was there from the very beginning,” said Brawn

“Now he is starting to work more effectively with the engineers and the technicians and organisation, because he has only worked at one F1 team before he worked for us.

“Nico will tell you he was a bit concerned coming into the team because of my relationship with Michael, the history, but he is comfortable with the way things have gone.

“I am very pleased with Nico we know we want to see some progress with Michael, it is not there yet – but you see snapshots of his performance and we need to put everything together. I am optimistic than next year we will have a better package generally, but a package that Michael will find a bit easier to use,” he added.

Virgin Racing are no longer looking to really challenge any of the main teams in Formula One. Virgin are now setting their sights on a 10th place finish in the Championship.

Formula One’s rules governing prize money are complicated, but only the top 10 in the Constructors’ Championship are given a handout. If you finish in the top 10 then that could mean $25 million bonus, and that is a great deal of money for one of the newcomers like Virgin, Lotus or Hispania.

When informed of the potential pot on offer, it perked up the ears of team owner Sir Richard Branson who was unaware of just how much money was at stake.

“There’s some money? You never told me that,” Branson said to CEO Graeme Lowdon, who replied: “It does make a difference.”

Lowdon added: “We have a long-term plan for the team, so getting a 10th-placed finish in the championship would be a bonus.

“If we get a point then it really would make a massive difference.”

When told the exact figure, a shocked Branson said: “Bloody hell, well yeah, I would like to get 10th place.

“Whereas I said I wouldn’t mind about 10th place, I’ve suddenly taken a big interest.”

It is rumoured that the US Grand Prix could be run at Monticello Motor Club, which is just spitting distance from New York City.

Formula One’s expressed interest in adding a US track to the global series after a long absence, but recent attempts to secure one have faltered. Monticello Motor Club president Ari Strauss thinks his track in upstate New York might have what it takes.

Here’s the letter in full:

Dear member,

Within the next day, you may read that Formula 1 (F1) is planning a return to the United States and has their sights on a special location in New York: Monticello Motor Club.

A few months ago, Bill McMichael and I met with Bernie Ecclestone, President/CEO of Formula One Management (FOM), and discussed the terms for an exclusive 10-year United States Grand Prix to be hosted at MMC. Shortly thereafter, Hermann Tilke, the chief engineer and circuit designer for F1, spent time at MMC and confirmed that our track and surrounding properties, with some expansion and minor track modifications, is an excellent location for a Grand Prix. Since receiving a letter of understanding from FOM confirming their hope to bring the US Grand Prix to Monticello, Bill and I have continued to secure the backing and support of local, state, and federal politicians and organizations.

Remi Taffin who is head of engine operations at Renault, says the manufacturer would be more than happy to supply more teams with engines.

Besides providing engines to its own Formula One outfit, the French manufacturer has also been supplying Red Bull Racing with power units since 2007. That could change in 2011 as several other teams, including Williams, are keen to swap their Cosworth engines with Renault ones.

“We certainly have got the capacity to supply more than the two teams we have been doing this year, it’s not a big problem for us.

“Obviously we have to produce a few more engines and get some more people to do the job. As far as getting an engine ready and supplying two teams, it’s then not a big problem to do so for three or four teams with an extra effort.”

Renault have impressed so far this season with Robert Kubica claiming two podiums in the first six races. This is in stark contrast to 2009 when they could only muster 26 points for the whole season.

Taffin says he is quite happy with the way the Renault engine has performed so far this year.

“We might not have the best level in terms of power, but you have to look overall; how you set up the engine in the car, how you can develop the engine in the car or the car around the engine. So, I have to say, overall maybe we are not in as bad shape as you hear people say about [us], but I am quite happy with this engine.

From the track point of view, we haven’t really changed the way we work from last year, the only thing that we really changed is the way we make the car work and the job we have done at the factory. Our job here, whether we are working on the engine, chassis, gearbox whatever, is to make sure we get 100 per cent out of what our factories are doing.

At the track, our main objective is to have all the parts available, which is sometimes quite tricky because we are developing the car in every area quite quickly and we tend to have some brand new parts for every race, so that is just one of the difficulties we are facing.”

Romain Grosjean has called up last season to replace Nelson Piquet Jr at Renault, but without a drive in 2010 he has reiterated his desire to return Formula One.

Grosjean didnt do so well with his races in last season Formula One, failing to score a single World Championship point.

The Frenchman, who had hoped to continue with the team this season, was ousted at the end of the year in favour of Vitaly Petrov, leaving him without a F1 drive.

And although he did find a race-seat in GT1 with Matech Ford, Grosjean is hoping for another shot at F1.

“It is not a new life, it is not forgetting Formula 1, I don’t hide that my aim is to go back to F1 next year for sure,” he told Autosport.

“But on the other hand driving is my passion and it is my job as well.

“It’s a new experience for me and maybe for the future it can help. And for sure I’m still trying to get the good contacts and the good opportunities to go to F1 next year.

“But for this year this opportunity came up. It is not like I want to switch my ideal career. It’s just one year, but I want to drive, I enjoy driving and when the chance came I thought it was good to take it.”
